Abstract
Copolyesters of poly(butylene isophthalate) and poly(butylene terephthalate) were prepared by melt polycondensation of 1,4-butanediol, isophthalic acid and terephthalic acid. The thermal stability was important in connection with their use as hot melt adhesives. The thermal degradation of these copolyesters and homopolyesters was determined through TGA, change of melt viscosity, GPC and GC/MS analyses. It was found that the thermal stability of the copolyesters decreased as the content of isophthalic acid increased. The results of GC/MS analysis of small molecule degradation products showed that thermal degradation occurs mainly in the butylene units.
