Abstract
The emergence of the Internet has thrown many new and unfamiliar file formats at the end users' doorstep. In this brave new multiplatform environment world, consisting mostly of UNIX workstations, PCs and Macs, and multi-media Web, end users now need to deal with a complex variety of files. This paper offers an easy-to-follow overview of common tools for archiving, compression and encoding (A/C/E) and their associated file formats on all these platforms. The purpose and benefits of A/C/E are explained. Common tools and file formats are discussed, including the global encoding standard MIME. An outlook into the immediate future of automated Java-based A/C/E technology is also given.
