Abstract

Grid damping stabilizers and FACTS devices can work together in real time to improve power system dynamic stability. The usefulness of an Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) and a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) in real-time coordination to regulate low frequency oscillations (LFOs) in a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) power system is investigated in this study. The grid PSS is designed using a modern intelligence technique called Farmland Fertility Algorithm (FFA), whereas the IPFC in the SMIB test system is designed using the supplementary controller of Power Oscillations Damping (POD). For the controller design, an eigenvalue objective function and a creation of close to zero control modes were devised. The test system was simulated for IPFC supplementary controller design and the FFA-PSS using nonlinear time-domain simulation in the MATLAB/SIMULINK domain. According to the simulation results, adding a supplementary controller to the IPFC increased LFO control and overall system dynamic stability.
