Abstract

In the groundbreaking application to the Federal Commission (FFC) in 2001, mobile satellite venture (MSV) unveiled a bold new architecture for a mobile satellite service with an ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) providing unparalleled coverage and spectral efficiency. Compared to the distributed space time code (STC) as the encoding operation is distributed among the cooperation nodes in terrestrial communication, we can regard ATCs similarly as relays in MSS using ATC. In this paper, in order to achieve spatial diversity gain, we propose system architectures to apply STC in MSS system. In the proposed spacetime coded system, antennas are no longer collocated at the transmitter or receiver. The scheme has no additional deployment requirement from the conventional MSS system and just needs signal processing for STC in ATC. Performance of the distributed space-time coded system in MSS will be compared to that in case of the conventional architecture of ATC and an application of two antennas on an ATC.
