Abstract

This study deals with the contribution of 103 different Cooperative Societies to rural development in the northern section of Bendel State in Nigeria. The paper reveals that the impact of the societies relates to the mobilisation/allocation of resources, diversification of the rural economy, the provision of items of wealth and the distribution of manufactured goods to members. The study shows that this impact is influenced by the environment and vice versa. It is suggested in the paper that there should be an increase in the volume of the societies' activities as well as an extension of the impact to other spheres of rural life.
