Abstract

CPI plans may be defined as award programs which provide teachers and often other school staff with pay bonuses for the achievement of specific school-wide educational objectives (Kelley, Heneman, & Mianowski, 1999, p. 4). CPI plans differ from individual performance or merit pay in that all teachers in the school receive the bonus based on meeting an objective predefined goal. The concept, first piloted in South Carolina in 1984, has been adopted in many U.S. states and is now being introduced in Canada and Britain. Implementation details vary considerably
