Abstract

PURPOSE: To explore cooling rates in various athletes with heat stroke and attempt to develop cooling curve tables for various populations. METHODS: Utilizing data collected from the Falmouth Road Race on Heat Stroke treated with Ice Water Imersion (IWI), cooling rates were examined in various populations; male, female, elite athlete, weekend warriors, and proposed cooling tables were established for these groups. RESULTS: Cooling rates are similar in certain groups, body types, which allow for the establishment of cooling tables. CONCLUSIONS: Cooling Tables can be developed for Heat Stroke treated with IWI, in certain sex, body composition & training groups. These are similar to Diving Tables used to treat decompression illness. In the absence of continuous indwelling rectal thermometers, or other methods of monitoring body temperature during cooling, these Cooling Tables can be used to treat heat stroke
