Abstract

We investigate local cooling of gauge field configurations in four-dimensional SU (2) lattice gauge theory. After abelian projection, abelian magnetic monopole current is identified in the cooled configurations and is used to compute the string tension. The string tension due to the monopoles is seen to be stable under many cooling steps, reproducing the uncooled result, although only 10–15% of the original monopole current links remain.
