Abstract

A possibility of cooling by an adiabatic magnetization in a magnetic field is considered. A simple Ising antiferromagnet consisting of two sublattice is proved to exhibit the cooling around the critical field between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin ordering. It is shown that the drop of temperature depends not only on the starting temperature at zero field, but also sensitively on the magnitude of ferromagnetic intra-sublattice interactions. For a model standing for CoCl 2 ·2H 2 O the temperature change is also calculated and compared with the observation by Kuramitsu et al .
