Abstract

Some species of Phaseolus and Lupinus have their origins in the Andes. The areas and yields of those food legumes introduced into South America are described. A comparison is made of production practices between countries with advanced technology and those dependent on traditional agriculture. Food legumes are an important source of protein, especially for the poorer sectors of the population. Common bean has the highest consumption in all the Andean countries. Current yields of food legumes could be increased dramatically if new cultivars could be developed and production technology improved.
