Abstract

We extend the technique due to Wolf and Ungerboeck (1986) of using convolutional codes (CC) along with preceding to improve the reliability of digital transmission/recording over the noisy (1-D) partial response (PR) channel to the more general class of channels described by the polynomials P/sub n/(D)=(1-D)(1+D)/sup n/. This class of polynomials models the high density magnetic recording channel (HDMRC), as pointed out by Thapar and Patel (1987). As a result, the same asymptotic coding gain (due to the CC) that is achieved on the noisy (1-D) channel can be realized on the HDMRC. >
