Abstract

This chapter discusses an ecofriendly approach to the treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW). Conventional management techniques, such as landfilling, cause environmental issues, and new technologies must be developed. We discuss in detail integrated MSW management systems. Different waste to energy conversion technologies utilize different wastes such as treatment of plastic waste (biomass) to generate syngas (biogas), which is very useful in power generation systems. This chapter also discusses the segregation of MSW into fractions before its treatment. Studies have reported significant variations in the composition of waste generated within countries like India, Malaysia, etc. Segregation, characterization, and utilization of MSW are covered here as well.
