Abstract

Conversations, and: His World Sam L. Linkous (bio) Conversations Conversations from somewhere, a past now faded—departed. A past that strains to show itself, even if only in short glimmers just as bright bursts on July 4th— a dark sky; a bright sky then dark. Memories on a winding road, often failing to make the curves only to run a-ground. Sometimes, a straight stretch— a path of least resistance however short, before another bend in the road. His World He never really leaves his world, just ours. He still works every day, does all the regular things, asks about Mama, is happy to see us, loves to laugh, and flirt with the ladies. In his world things are pretty much normal from the inside. It’s our view from the outside that’s sad. [End Page 54] Sam L. Linkous Sam L. Linkous is an old-time musician who helped take care of his father, a retired coal miner, until his passing at 92, and also helped to restore their old home place. He has worked for the Hindman Settlement School, and for the Augusta Heritage Center at Davis and Elkins College, but now he coordinates continuing education for Virginia Tech.
