Abstract
This paper was written in honor of the 70th birthday of Prof. Dr. A. Neetens, for all his work in the field of Neuro-Ophthalmology and his kind personality.We describe a patient with convergence-retraction nystagmus caused by a hemorrhage in the right thalamus and dorsal midbrain. This was documented by magnetic resonance imaging. Convergence-retraction nystagmus has a high localizing value for a (most frequently tumorous or vascular) lesion near of within the dorsal midbrain. The convergent eye movements have the characteristics of saccades; the retraction nystagmus is caused by simultaneous contraction of all extraocular muscles.
