Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to summarize a recent set of studies focusing on the Canadian experience with outward foreign direct investment (FDI).' Canadian evidence on the topic is useful for several reasons. One is that it provides a small country perspective which complements available Swedish evidence on the small home country experience. A second is that Canadian FDI has grown rapidly in recent years, with much of this growth coming after the major reviews for the United States and the United Kingdom that were carried out decades ago.2 A third is that the behaviour of several Canadian multinational enterprises (MNEs), such as Varity Corporation's decision to relocate its head office to Buffalo, has ignited storms of protests from Canadian politicians.
