Abstract

Neutron diffraction patterns are obtained from a sample of vitreous silica, Significant changes are observed to occur in the patterns when either the wavelength of the incident neutron is changed or the sample cooled to liquid nitrogen temperatures. Further changes are observed when only the diffraction pattern of elastically scattered neutrons is recorded. It is suggested that these differences in the patterns are due to partial elimination of the 'static approximation' distortions. The elastic diffraction pattern is corrected for an approximate Debye-Waller factor and Fourier transformed to yield the radial distribution function.
