Abstract A simplified treatment of convective overshooting which includes the flux carried by the overshooting elements is presented. It is applied to a 3 M0 model and predicts the extent of overshooting to be 0.23 pressure scale heights. This distance is determined by three factors: the convective velocity and efficiency and the gradient of the radiative temperature gradient. Sample calculations indicate that in most main-sequence stars the fractional mass added to the convective core is approximately the same. Finally it is concluded that uncertainties in convection theory make it impossible to assign definitive values to the overshooting distance.
