Abstract

Analysis of the dispersion relation for electrostatic waves in a beam-filled pipe with an axial magnetic field B reveals that short wavelength standing transverse perturbations can exhibit growth along the B field. Thus millimeter wave amplifiers can be conceived of requiring neither high voltage beams nor high B fields.
