Abstract

Convective heat transfer through porous insulation in a vertical slot is examined analytically. A simple analytical formula for calculating the heat transfer is presented, after obtaining a matching coefficient by comparison with numerical solutions. Both free and forced convection, simulating wall leakage in common building structures, are considered. Numerical results for the case of no wall leakage are in good agreement with those presently available. It is shown that, for appreciable wall leakage, the dominant mode of heat transfer is due to the enthalpy change of the transferred fluid as it is blown through the enclosure.
