Abstract

Mass transfer in a gaseous phase is discussed with regard to crystal growth based upon a chemical vapor transport process. Particular attention is given to convection in a closed-system. The flow pattern due to a horizontal temperature gradient is described. The manner in which thermal convection enhances mass transport through the gaseous phase is analyzed. The central result obtained is an expression for the ratio of the mass transfer by thermal convection and diffusion in a closed-tube process.
