Abstract

The physics of heat transfer across stably stratified fluid layers adjacent to horizontal surfaces are examined. Different assumptions are found to lead to widely varying values for the convection coefficient, and this raises some doubt about the applicability of the present recommended values for horizontal building surfaces.
