Abstract
draining ears and dry ears and that sensorineural hearing impairment should not result from the mere process of grafting the tympanic membrane. The major area of disagreement is in regard to the technique of grafting : underlay (under surface), overlay (outer surface) and use of homograft tympanic membranes. There are problems with each technique. It is apparent that the results with each are comparable in the hands of those who have used each procedure extensively. They know the problems associated with their procedure and how to avoid them in most cases. The novice will find that the most important element in his success rate is how well he uses the technique, not which technique he uses. At the Otologic Medical Group (OMG) we prefer the overlay technique, but use an underlay on occasion.(l)
