Abstract
The Fair Head–Clew bay line, a major Caledonian fault zone in Ireland was reactivated throughout the Palaeozoic. At a regional scale, basement configuration controlled fault zone segmentation and the response to plate vector variations during and after plate collision. In the Ox Mountains inlier, mid-crustal deformation partitioning in both metasedimentary and igneous rocks influenced the formation of a sinistral Early to Mid-Devonian pull-apart basin. Subsequent reactivation by Late Devonian dextral strike-slip and Early Carboniferous normal faulting was focused on the margins of a structural high formed by the then exhumed Ox Mountains metamorphic block.
