Abstract

The design of a nonlinear controller that automatically adjusts the pump rate of the Q-switched laser to allow for customizing the temporal pulse shape of the laser output is proposed. The design is based on a method called feedback linearization, which is a well established technique in nonlinear dynamical system theory. It is demonstrated that such a nonlinear dynamical system can be transformed into a chain of two integrators by applying state feedback. Thus the desired output pulse shape is produced by applying its second derivative to the controller input. The design is verified by simulating the closed loop device in MATLAB Simulink.
