Abstract

Analysis of the scattering from a novel type of printed microstrip high impedance surface (HIS) is presented. The unusual surface-impedance modulation mechanism allows the phase control of the scattered field for both reflectarray and holographic applications. The HIS consists of a periodic arrangement of similar macro unit cells, formed by sequential repetitions of similar elementary unit cells that exhibit analytic dispersion diagram in terms of Mathieu/Hill functions for the TE/TM polarized surface waves. The phase of the scattered field is controlled by the position of unit cells within the macrocells. Analyses of different sequences are presented, proving the effectiveness of the method in controlling the scattering from the surface. Study of the field along the longitudinal direction of the sequences is presented, and the associated bandwidths are quantified.
