Abstract

Full-sib families were produced of the European oyster, Ostrea edulis. This is the first recorded success at controlled mating in the genus Ostrea. Matings were made of selected stock from Nova Scotia and a recently imported stock from Maine producing pure and hybrid families. The spawning rate differed in the 2 years of observation (70% and 40%). There were also significant differences between the stocks in spawning rate. The Maine stock had a higher rate each year. However, there was no apparent difference between the stocks in growth rate to 2 years of age. Thus, there was little evidence of heterosis in the hybrids.
