Abstract

Single crystal α-Fe whiskers of various orientations and geometries were grown by the hydrogen reduction of ferrous halides. Whiskers in the form of ribbons were procured by a “controlled growth” technique involving oxygen poisoning during the growth process. Crystal geometries, orientation and general appearance were characterized by use of the X-ray precession method and by observation in the scanning electron microscope and the high voltage electron microscope.
