Abstract

Controller design has been identified as one of the major activity in small scale unmanned helicopter development. Several approaches have been reported with varying degree of achievement and performance both in simulation and real-time implementation. This paper presents a survey of relevant research on control of the unmanned helicopter. The objective is to provide summary of the state of the art approaches in control design for the system with respect to modeling and implementation issues regarding flight control system. The unmanned helicopter flight control components and objectives are introduced first. Several model based and non-model based control design methods are presented with a view to highlight the strength and weakness of each of them. Conclusion is made with summary of the current trend, challenges and future direction in the control of unmanned helicopter.
