Abstract

This paper proposes a novel self-bearing dual stator solid rotor axial flux induction motor (BDSSRAFIM) which combines axial thrust magnetic bearing and rotating electric motor for flywheel energy storage system (FESS). First of all, development of FESS is briefly introduced. Secondly, in order to control BDSSRAFIM accurately, this paper analyzes its construction and characteristics, derives a valid equivalent mathematic model and proposes a differential excitation vector control method which is based on air gap magnetic field orientation. Finally, a 5kW BDSSRAFIM prototype is designed and set up for experiments. The effectiveness of method is verified by simulation and experimental results.
