Abstract

This chapter focuses on the control schemes for the synchronous motor drives. The synchronous motor used in high‐power medium voltage (MV) drives can be generally classified into two categories: wound rotor synchronous motor (WRSM) and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The synchronous motors can be controlled by various methods, including zero d‐axis current (ZDC) control, maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control, direct torque control (DTC), and power factor control (PFC). The chapter introduces the dynamic and steady‐state models of the synchronous motor. It elaborates the operating principle of the ZDC, MTPA, and DTC schemes for the voltage source converter (VSC) and current source converter (CSC) fed synchronous motor drives. The drive system dynamic performance is illustrated with computer simulations. The synchronous motor drive with the ZDC control features linear torque‐current characteristics and easy controller design.
