Abstract

The effectiveness of 20 different treatments in the control of several pests of Scotch pine Christmas trees was evaluated in 1967. Oxydemetonmethyl and Azodrin® (3-hydroxy- N -methylcis-crolonamide dimethyl phosphate) applied in mid-May appear to give adequate, complete-season control of Euluchnus agilis (Kaltenbach) and the European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy), without seriously affecting predators of the aphid. Azodrin also controlled larvae of Exoteteia nepheos Freeman which were tunneling in new candles; oxydemetonmethyl gave less than 50% reduction of this species, but did not kill parasites developing in the remaining larvae. Trichlorfon, azinphosmethyl, and dimethoate were effective against E. nepheos , but did not provide control of Eulachnus agilis . All materials tested gave 100% control of N. sertifer . Mid-August treatments with oxydemetonmethyl, Azodrin, formothion, and dimethoate effectively reduced populations of E. agilis .
