Abstract

Various control measures were evaluated against Osphranteria coerulescens Redtenbacher, a serious pest of rosaceous fruit trees in middle and southern Iran. Nine hymenopterous species were observed inside the larval tunnel, and 3 of these, Xorides corcyrensis Kriechbaumer (Ichneumonidae), Eurytoma sp. (Eurytomidae), and Chalcedectus balashowski Steffan (Chalccdectidae) are active larval parasites. A woodpecker, as a larval predator, caused considerable mortality to the pest. The borer appears to he prevalent in light soils with a low water-holding capacity. Spraying with Cidial® (ethyl mercaptophenylacetate S -ester with O,O -dimethyl phosphorodithioate) and monocrotophos gave considerable control. Under local conditions, cutting infested twigs between July 15 and Aug. 15 with long pruning shears is the simplest, safest, and cheapest method of control.
