Abstract

NH 4 + represses degradation of ribosomes, gamete formation, and arginine uptake in wild-type Chlamydomonas reinhardti. None of these factors is repressed by NH 4 + in the arginine-requiring mutant of C. reinhardti, arg-1. The inability of NH 4 + to exert control in arg-1 can be explained in terms of multiple mutational sites.
