Abstract

This chapter focuses on a comprehensive review of the operation and control methods applied to the modular multilevel converter (MMC) system under unbalanced AC-grid conditions. The mathematical models of MMC are analyzed under AC-grid faults, including the AC-side mathematical model and the instantaneous power mathematical model. Then, a positive- and negative-sequence current control and a zero-sequence current control are given for the AC-side current control of the MMC. Afterwards, several methods to suppress positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence components of circulating currents are presented for MMCs under unbalanced conditions. Finally, a summary is given to conclude this chapter.
