Abstract

Experiments were conducted to find the cause of adverse hydride orientation in the Zircaloy cladding of failed UO 2 fuel tubes irradiated at the Savannah River Plant. It was shown that oriented hydride platelets were produced in Zircaloy by the application of stress during hydride precipitation and by deformation prior to hydride precipitation.
