Abstract

Abstract Isazophos granules applied in bands above the seed at planting (1.0–4.0 kg/ha) or as a post-emergence band spray (1.2 kglha), significantly reduced greasy cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon) damage and loss of maize plants between emergence and harvest. The level of cutworm damage recorded on given assessment dates was significantly correlated with the reduction in plant numbers from emergence to harvest, and with grain yield. Early postemergence treatments were shown to be essential to gain maximum benefit from cutworm control. There was a rapid decline in plant numbers, resulting from the effects of cutworm, from emergence to the fourth week from planting, with little reduction occurring after the sixth week.
