Abstract

Abstract Spring or summer ploughing followed by discing or rotary hoeing gave control of grass grub [Costelytra zealandica (White) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)] estimated to be between 41 and 96%. The effectiveness of ploughing was not increased by further cultivation. Pupae were apparently more easily killed than mature or immature larvae and beetles but, because the best control was obtained by ploughing before the highest number of pupae were present, it is probable that prepupae were more affected than pupae.
