Abstract

Exchange coupling force between magnetic layers plays a crucial role in overwritable media using light intensity modulation. To control the force, an additional intermediate layer having low magnetic anisotropy has been fabricated conventionally. The plasma treatment with nitrogen was tried for controlling the exchange coupling. This method has the possibility of cost reduction and improvement of sensitivity in comparison with conventional method. The exchange coupling was well controlled by the parameters of discharge. The disks obtained in this study showed sufficiently good read-write characteristics.
