Abstract

During the fifth larval instar, the secretion of the male accessory glands of Locusta migratoria is incomplete. The full range of protein fractions is produced only after the 15th day of imaginal life. Male accessory glands of young fifth larval instars (0–1 day old) do not produce the full imaginal secretion, even when transplanted into adult hosts; they are not competent. Competence to produce full imaginal secretion is triggered during the 2nd and 3rd day of the fifth larval instar (critical period) by ecdysteroids in the absence of juvenile hormone. This competence is definitive and cannot be reversed.
