All patients had hypertension that responded poorly to control of extracellular fluid volume and drugs. Five patients had a long-standing history of severe hypertension prior to dialysis. Cardiac catheterization in two patients, peritoneal membrane biopsy in two, estimates of gastrointestinal protein loss in three, measurements of protein concentration in ascitic fluid (1 to 6 g/100 ml), and postmortem examination in six, showed no explanation for either ascites or cachexia.
