Abstract

Currently, the largest potential for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions caused by traffic in Europe is to be found in the optimisation of heavy duty diesel engines. The most efficient method to reduce raw emissions of nitrogen oxide of diesel engines is cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) [1, 2]. However, the application of EGR in heavy duty engines means that, in contrast to passenger cars, it must work reliably at full load and also during highly transient operation as a sufficiently precise emission control measure. The article presents an EGR control concept for heavy duty engines developed by FEV-Motorentechnik in cooperation with RWTH Aachen, and the results achieved with a heavy duty engine with cooled high-pressure EGR and VGT turbocharging.
