Abstract

Raising and control comprise two groups of related constructions that have been the focus of intense scrutiny during the era of generative linguistics. In the prototypical cases, the lexically governed constructions are multiclause structures in which the matrix verb takes an infinitival complement. Although they share the surface string NP-V(-NP)-to-VP in English, raising and control are distinguished by a number of properties, including distinct thematic structures, the possibility of pleonastic subjects, the behavior of idioms, and others. Analogues have been identified in many languages, which have also unearthed related constructions such as copy raising, possessor raising, and backward control.
