Abstract

This paper presents the control and modeling of a wind energy system that consists of a single-switch three phase boost converter with a sensorless maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method. The single-switch three phase boost converter, which has the advantage of using one switch in the converter to achieve power factor correction for the generator output current, and is able to simplify the control scheme for MPPT in WES applications. The MPPT method in the proposed design is sensorless in nature, which means that the MPPT controller is able to extract maximum power for different wind speeds without using a wind speed sensor. The control of the MPPT relies on feedforwarding both the input voltage and current of the boost circuit to provide the instantaneous power information to the MPPT controller. The modeling and stability analysis of the complete system will be discussed in this paper. Simulation results are provided to verify with the theoretical analysis.
