Abstract

The notes in this paper, in alphabetical order of genera and species, deal mainly with interpretations and reductions, as the result of my examination of numerous authentic specimens borrowed from many herbaria, particularly from those of Paris (P), Vienna (W), Munich (M), G6ttingen (GOET), Copenhagen (C), Stockholm (S), Lund (LD), New York (NY) and Ann Arbor (MICH). Very valuable consignments have also been sent for study by the United States National Herbarium (US), the Instituto Agron6mico do Norte at Bel6m, Para (IAN), the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amaz6nia at Manaus (INPA) and the Instituto de Pesquisas Agron6micas at Recife, Pernambuco (IPA), as well as by other correspondents. I wish to thank the authorities of all the above-mentioned institutions for their generous help, and in particular Prof. H. Merxmfiller (Munich) and Dr. K. H. Rechinger (Vienna) for lending unique holotypes of which no duplicates are known to exist. Once again, the photographs prepared at the Chicago Natural History Museum have been of great assistance.
