The stages and life history of Abagrotis alternate (Grote) are described. The species overwinters in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instars and has 1 generation each year. Head-capsule measurements show 6 instars. The species ranges from the Atlantic nearly to the Pacific coast but appears to be most common in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. This cutworm apparently has a wide range of host plants, which include fruit, forest and shade trees, deciduous shrubs, and vegetable crops.
