Abstract

The dimensions of the problem of sound pickup, recording, transmission, and reproduction over the 2-steradian space surrounding the listener usually is determined by the number of transmission channels economically available for recording and broadcasting—2 in the present-day home records and receivers but with the possibility for expansion to 3 or 4. The problem is complicated by the mandamus of stereo- and mono-compatibility and by the requirements of the artist/producer who seeks superior editing capabilities for creating an effective sonic performance unaided by the audio-visual effects and the psychological aid of a live performance. Some of the theories of surround-sound hemispheric recording and reproduction are outlined together with proposed implementations. A demonstration of 2-channel hemispheric sound reproduction will be provided in the display area.
