Abstract
The absolute elemental concentrations of S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br and Pb in the wall of the same human basilar artery both with and without atheromatous lesions have been determined by the PIXE analysis method. There seems to be no elemental concentration gradient along the vascular wall. The mean K, Ca and Cu concentrations were significantly higher in the arteries with atheromatous lesions as against in the arteries free of artheromatous lesions. The correlation CaCu was positive for the healthy arteries and remains so when the disease sets in.
