Abstract

We consider the time dependent Boussinesq equations in vorticity-stream function formulation. The vorticity transport equation and the temperature equation are cast in divergence form. The numerical algorithm is a finite difference one in time and space. The 4 test cases have been considered. In steady cases, some characteristic values of the velocity components which were required are given with at most 3 significant digits. We believe that it would be meaningless to give more digits, because of the limited accuracy of a finite difference scheme compared to spectral methods. In the unsteady cases we present accurate determinations of the critical Grashof numbers corresponding to the onset of unsteady flow and give the dependence of the oscillation period in the vicinity of the critical Grashof number.
