Abstract

A technique for the antenatal determination of sex is presented. Amniotic fluid was obtained from 15 women from the Jose Joaquin Aquirre Clinical Hospital in Santiago Chile by either transabdominal needle puncture puncture of the bulging vaginal membranes or by puncture of the membranes after hysterotomy. The fluid was microscopically examined for sex chromatin. Of 15 women studied 8 bore females and 7 bore males. The sex chromatin levels ranged from 14%-70% in females and 3%-10% in males. It is concluded that transabdominal or transvaginal needle puncture of fetal membranes is not dangerous to the mother or fetus if done with care.
