Abstract

Noise intrusion through exterior walls containing windows and doors was studied in the laboratory. Although windows and doors are the weakest links in exterior facades, relatively simple modifications can improve the overall sound transmission loss property to satisfactory levels. Wood double hung and aluminum slider windows were evaluated as web as doors with solid wood and solid particleboard cores. Ordinary storm windows and doors proved to be reasonable solutions to improve walls in their capability to protect against outdoor noise. A useful family of curves is presented that makes possible the combining of wall, window, and door transmission losses.
